Bug eyes or Sly? Private or Privy? The Essential Guide to Sunnies!

by Pipa on June 30, 2010

Sunglasses trends change every year and we’re bombarded by all the latest looks in the glossy mags. One thing is for certain though, some styles just don’t work for some shaped faces and try as hard as you might, there’s not much you can do about it!! It’s a little bit like fitting a square peg into a round hole and believe me, I’ve been there!! I’ve tried loads over the years and having a long oval face, means my safest bet is the Aviator – luckily a classic! Big round ones on me really make me look like a beetle….all I need is a deely bopper on my head and I’d be at home at the bottom of the garden without a doubt!

Rule of thumb is, if you have a heart shaped or diamond shaped face; if you have a pointy chin and wide cheek bones – then you look great with quirky retro shaped sunglasses (lucky you!). Choose a pair which angle out towards the top corner, this will widen out the face to balance the jaw line. Coloured frames and arms with patters will soften the lower portion of our face shape by drawing attention to the eye area. Also more delicate glasses will work perfectly (Jennifer Anniston is a good one to watch for heart shapes).

If you have an oblong face, you can get away with loads, in fact, you can’t really go wrong!  If your face is particularly narrow, try to find sunglasses which don’t go beyond the widest part of your head. Opt for round or square shapes….Jackie O / Victoria Beckham style.

If you have a round face, try to avoid round glasses as they draw attention to and exaggerate the roundness!! Look for glasses with straight lines which will add variety and structure.

There are loads of looks right now that you can enjoy from the sporty aviator, to colourful opaque frames. Have a look at these Prada ones for some colour inspiration.

Glamour Magazine have a fab slideshow called The Ultimate Sunglasses Guide which is up to date and fun – why not take a look!
